Program Overview
EcoAction Arlington has a goal to increase the tree canopy in Arlington and offers a tree planting program funded by the Arlington County Tree Canopy Fund. Owners of private property, including single-family homes, townhouses, condos, and places of worship, can apply to get a native tree planted on their property. Public properties, including schools and parks, are not eligible for this program.
Originally authorized by the Arlington County Board in 2007, this program is administered by EcoAction Arlington in partnership with the Arlington County Forestry and Natural Resources Commission. Since its inception, we have planted more than 3,800 trees!
In order to address environmental justice and mitigate inequity in the tree canopy throughout the county, EcoAction Arlington created the Tree Canopy Equity Program to target planting efforts in civic associations that would benefit the most from targeted, sustained tree planting efforts.
Apply For a Free Tree
Applying for the Tree Canopy Fund could get you a 5% credit on your stormwater utility bill in 2025!
Trees help stormwater management by intercepting rainfall and reducing stress on the stormwater system. Large canopy trees planted through the Arlington County Tree Canopy Fund are eligible for a 5% stormwater utility credit. Eligibility is based on the native tree being 1” caliper and the number of trees required to receive credit varies from 1-4 trees. Click Here To Learn More

Tree Maintenance
Follow this maintenance schedule for the life of your tree.
We are running a pilot program to provide maintenance for mature trees in good health on private property that are going to survive for many years to come. Please review program details here to see if your tree(s) are eligible. Update: As of April 2023, we are not currently accepting any additional applicants into this program.
We also offer funding for maintenance to be performed on specific trees designated as both Specimen Trees through the Tree Preservation Ordinance and Champion Trees by Arlington County. More information is available on the Arlington County website: Specimen Trees and Champion Tree Program.
