EcoAction Arlington Partnership on Solar Cooperatives
EcoAction Arlington is partnering with the Community Power Network (CPN) to introduce’ neighborhood solar cooperatives to Arlington.’ CPN is a non-profit organization that helps communities o build and promote locally-based renewable energy projects & policies.’ A solar cooperative is formed when a group of neighbors goes solar together. By going solar as a group, each participant saves on the cost of their system and gets the support of the group as they go through the process. The installer chosen by the group is able to order equipment in bulk and reduce travel and marking costs, allowing them to pass significant savings onto the participants.’ CPN works with its partner to educate and recruit participants, prescreens homeowners for eligibility, offers guidance in soliciting bids and selecting an installer, monitors installation of solar systems for members, and facilitates continued advocacy for solar power by the cooperative members.’ In order to sustain its work and programs, CPN builds a fee-for-service’ into each successful project to be paid by the installer, which is more than offset by the savings.
