Arlingtonians have already made clear to County officials their support for phasing out noisy, polluting gas-powered leaf blowers. Now two bills are making their way through the Virginia General Assembly that would give localities in dense urban and suburban areas the ability to ban or regulate the use of gas-powered leaf blowers after a minimum transition period of at least 12 months.
EcoAction Arlington, Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions Arlington Hub, and the Sierra Club Potomac River Group recognize the key role state legislation plays in advancing Arlington’s ability to meet its climate goals. The major retrenchment on environmental policies atthe federal level makes the state role in advancing climate and environmental policies even more important. Anticipating that the political dynamics in Richmond will be more favorable than in recent years, we offer the following recommendations for Arlington’s legislative priorities for the 2026 General Assembly session
EcoAction Arlington, Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions, and Sierra Club Potomac River Group greatly appreciated the opportunity to participate in a staff-sponsored stakeholders’ roundtable in late August to discuss the County’s planned update to Green Building Incentive Policy (GBIP). We found the roundtable discussions to be frank and informative, giving us better insight into the perspectives and challenges faced by builders.

Sierra Club’s Potomac River Group, EcoAction Arlington, and Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions Arlington Hub are alarmed that the One Rosslyn project is moving forward with minimal sustainability requirements and contrary to the County’s recently adopted Climate Resolution and its long-term climate goals. Penzance is not participating in the Green Building Incentive Policy. We do not believe this decision absolves Penzance from its obligation to meet core Arlington community climate-related needs and values through the site plan process. These values are not reflected by current standard site plan conditions.
