Today’s the big day … The day when thousands of area residents will come together to participate in Do More 24, a 24-hour online fundraiser powered by United Way of the National Capital Area.
To illustrate the impact of your donations, today we share the story of an Arlington resident with whom we worked through the Arlington Energy Masters program.
Remedios (center, with Energy Masters volunteers and program partner Gerry Shannon of Arlington Thrive) was particularly happy to see the Energy Masters. On our first workday in her affordable housing community, she eagerly greeted volunteers as they were unloading supplies and asked when we would be headed to her home. She’d heard about the work we do … installing CFLs, faucet aerators, low-flow shower heads, smart power strips, and providing energy efficiency education.
Remedios has lived in her apartment for more than 13 years. She shared that she really appreciates “the time the Energy Masters spend making people’s home more water and energy efficient.” She also valued the tip she learned about using power strips because, “it will help save money.” Our work in her apartment helped to improve the comfort in her home and will save her money on energy and water bills.

Over the past year, your donations have enabled us to:
- Deliver 81 fun and interactive environmental education and energy efficiency programs to more than 1,400 students in Arlington schools;
- Remove more than 240 bags of trash, debris, and recyclable material from our parks and streams;
- Improve our tree canopy by planting 240 new trees throughout the County;
- Remove more than seven truckloads of invasive plants from local parks;
- Improve the energy efficiency and water conservation for 157 families living in affordable housing buildings;
- Mobilize 580 volunteers who performed more than 4,000 hours of volunteer service throughout the community; and
- Organize 66 exhibitors to provide practical information about making our lifestyles more sustainable as part of our Green Living Expo.
