Applications for our current free tree cycle are now officially closed, but you do not have to miss out next time!
Our tree planting program runs twice every year. By getting a head start on your application “homework” today, you can secure your free trees the moment the next cycle opens.

Get Ready in 4 Easy Steps

  • Step 1: Pick your tree: Look at our approved species list and choose your favorite [open list here]*.
  • Step 2: Find the perfect spot: Pick a place in your yard with enough room to grow.
  • Step 3: Snap & sketch: Take a quick photo of the spot and draw a simple overhead map.
  • Step 4: Stay tuned: Save your notes and photos so you can apply instantly when the link opens!

Tree Stewards are available to help! Tree Stewards are volunteer tree experts that can help you figure out which species to choose for your property, locate where to plant a tree, and other issues related to tree planting and maintenance. Please fill out the Request a Tree Steward form and you will be connected with a Tree Steward.

*Available tree species vary each plant seasoning depending on availability at that time

Note: Only the Tree Equity Program, available in 13 targeted neighborhoods, offers small trees and shrubs. The Tree Planting program emphasizes the planting of large native trees. Those residents interested in whips of smaller trees (i.e. with mature height from 20 to 35 feet) are encouraged to apply to the Arlington County Tree Distribution Program which takes place every fall.
